A Helpful Guide on How to Fix the Takeaway
Getting the club started back properly is one of the biggest keys to a successful golf swing. Without a good takeaway, you will be trying to recover for the rest of your swing – and a good shot is unlike to result. Many golfers have problems in their takeaway and don’t even know it, meaning that they spend all of their time trying to fix flaws later in the swing when the problem is right in front of them the whole time. If you are able to take some time to fix your takeaway and eliminate that as a problem, you should see the quality and consistency of your shots quickly improve.
Following are three tips on how to fix your takeaway once and for all –
- Less Hands, More Arms. The more common mistake made in the takeaway is using the hands to initiate the motion of the club, instead of the arms and shoulders. When your hands are too active in the takeaway, the clubhead will be forced to the inside of the proper path, and a slice is the likely result. Try to simply rotate your torso away from the target during the first part of the swing, so that your hands are quiet and your body does the work of moving the club.
- Slow Down. There is no need to rush through the takeaway – the ball isn’t going anywhere until you hit it. Try moving the club back slowly and let it gradually accumulate speed through the swing until it comes down into the ball at impact. The only part of your swing that needs to be fast is the moment when you hit the ball. The rest can be controlled and gradual to make it easier to create solid contact.
- Stay Balanced. Another common mistake during the takeaway is sliding away from the target and winding up with a majority of your weight on the back foot. This is a hard mistake to recover from, and usually leads to poor contact and a weak shot. Focus on staying balanced throughout the takeaway, with your weight evenly distributed between your two feet. When you are able to stay balanced all the way to the top of your backswing, you will be in a more powerful and athletic position from which to actually hit the shot. Stay on balance in the takeaway, and the rest of the swing just might fall into place.
