How to Deal with an Uphill Lie: Professional Golfer’s Advice
Dealing with uneven lies is one of the important skills that separates good golfers from average ones. While you might be able to hit a pretty predictable ball flight from a flat lie in the middle of the fairway, it is more difficult to do so from a lie where the ball is on a slope. Hitting from an uphill lie is one of the most challenging situations you will find on the course because it makes it difficult to keep your balance and transfer your weight as you would during a normal swing.
If you would like some help dealing with the difficult uphill lie, consider the following tips.
- Take an extra club. The first adjustment you should make for an uphill lie is to use an extra club to make sure you can cover the full distance of the shot. There are two reasons for this – first, the ball will fly higher off of the uphill lie due to the slope of the ground, so you need to accommodate for that added height. Also, it will be more difficult to generate your full club head speed when standing on an upslope, so using an extra club allows you to not have to swing quite as hard.
- Don’t drift away from the target. If you allow your weight to drift back and away from the target during your backswing, there is a good chance you will never recover during the downswing. Make an effort to stay as balanced as possible throughout the swing, keeping your center of gravity in between your feet as much as possible. You will likely find it difficult to shift your weight toward the target during your downswing due to the slope, so focus on a controlled and balanced rotational swing.
- Play for a pull. Often when playing from an uphill lie you will hit a slight pull due to the fact that you can’t quite move your weight during the swing as you usually would. This isn’t a big deal – as long as you plan on it when picking your target. Figure out where you want the ball to land, then adjust slightly for the pull that you expect to hit. As long as this element is taken into consideration while you are planning the shot, it is okay to hit a little bit of a pull from an uphill lie.
